Fortunately, I still have my Z 7II to go. But I'm not going nuts at all about that issue. Yes, it's an unfortunate experience, but this also can happen to other brands.

I decided to send it in anyway on day one. I’m scheduled to get my camera back tomorrow. I’m glade they took care of it right away. Good for Nikon. Nikon firmware up dates have been rock solid for me. I don’t hesitate to update at release. Not like the stories I’ve heard about other brands. @sstobbe181710 months ago 6630 is not the number with problems, it's the range of serial numbers they were able to find that might have a problem. Now or in the future. It just seems that they want to be sure to check those cameras in order to prevent this from becoming a real problem (meaning: owners will have the mentioned problem).
If you look at how they go about this, it seems their service is great in this matter.
Yes, if you're affected, it will be a pain in the ass. But ever since the whole pandemic, quality of goods has dropped (not just electronics, I had a new siphon lid that had a leakage - something that hardly ever happened before the pandemic but nowadays is something that happens regularly). Your design can be as perfect as you can think of, but when some parts are not well enough controlled on quality (something that is near to being impossible with every component that goes in a camera or device), you might end up with this.
Has it to do with not being produced in Japan any more? Most likely, that's part of the problem. However, people don't want to pay decent prices any more, everything has to be as cheap as possible and yet the best quality as well.
Other brands might have problems as well. However, they might just take it up "case by case", without diving into the range of serial numbers that possibly could be affected.
Nikon looked into this, found something not right, took actions and let the information go out into the world. People can act on that now.
Let's compare this to Apple. They deny, deny again, and again, and yet again. Then they simply can't deny again, won't really take any action, until forced upon taking action... Yet, almost nobody complains about Apple and their shitty way of doing business. It's just how Apple is: "the denial company".
Seems that Nikon at least respects their customers and take action.

@starbase2185 months ago Do you shoot Nikon? Yes.
If so, have you experienced a Nikon recall, how did it go? No. My D750 is doing just fine.
Do you own a Nikon Z8? No, although... sometimes it's tempting.
If so, is your camera one of the recalled units? Not applicable.
So regarding bodies, I have no issues. I do have a lens though, that is quite good, and that I've recently learned might develop an issue. It's the AF-P 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 E (FX) lens. Apparently some people are reporting autofocus issues after some time. Mine hasn't developed any issues. But if there is a problem, Nikon should do a recall of these lenses. And I'd happily send in mine.
Having said that, I shot Pentax before and they never admitted there was a problem with the SDM AF motors they used. And this affected many of their best lenses (16-50/2.8, 50-135/2.8 to name a few). And I did experience these issues.
So all in all, I wouldn't go off and point the finger at Nikon, or claim that Nikon customers "fear yet another fiasco". That seems too easy.

@stanhooper511710 months ago I have had Nikon cameras since the F2 DSLR and have never dealt with a recall. Of course, no Nikon I have purchased has been close to the camera's announcement date; I have to save up to pay the price, so by the time I can pay, the glitches have been resolved. When the D cameras came out I could never afford the digital equivalents of the F5 or F6, so had to settle for "lesser" models which still required a savings time before I could make a purchase. That's true even for the first Z camera; just last month I purchased a Z 7 II. ... 1

@ricohflex77710 months ago Not being able to mount a lens is so basic. This is atrocicous. It means there was NO Quality Control check at the manufacturing stage. Made in Thailand has Quality issues compared to Made in Japan. if sold over counter in a shop, the salesman would have mounted a standard lens, turned on the camera and showed the customer that everything is working. ... 1

@michaels860710 months ago Hello..Let's dig in.. I TOLD everyone to watch out for Nikon. I told you that the Nikon D850 was going to be the last well built camera and was over engineered. I told you to watch out for the opposite and sure enough, there was the z6/7 recall. I went on many channels and LOT of Nikon worshippers got pissed, upset, and a few threatened me, for showing the FACTS about the KING OF RECALLS, Nikon. Just today, someone wrote me back and said it was not really an issue. I was like how is a camera not able to mount the lens not an issue???? This bozo also said that Nikon took care of the shipping and repair for free, and I was like they are supposed to. JC picked a random number and it was broken. In the meantime, you have no camera to use that you spent your money on. This is around the 18th recall from one company that has been around for over 100 years.. I also waitied and bought the MK2 version of my FF camera.
    D600
    D750 THREE recalls
    D810
    Z6/7..
So since the D850 they have only made three great cameras..

That's true even for the first Z camera; just last month I purchased a Z 7 II. ... 1

@brassboy7710 months ago I have a z8. It IS on the recall list. But so far I have had no issues. I have not sent it in yet. But I am told they are only paying for UPS Ground instead of at least 2-day, which I think is ridiculous. I have not even paid the credit card bill yet. ... 1

@guyjordan820110 months ago Not affecting me but at least they’re not hiding the problem. Certainly unfortunate but people have short memories so I don’t think it’ll be impactful. 2

@borlach32110 months ago Yes, for good reason. Nikon’s track record is not great. And after all this waiting people went through? Glad I switched to Sony ages ago. Honestly, I don’t know any Canon or Sony owner who would switch to Nikon today. No offense. ... 2

@tectorama10 months ago Why is it a fiasco ? This camera is in great demand, and I am waiting for one myself. I believe the lens mount
problem is only affecting a small number of cameras sold in the US.
