In this episode I'm detecting a great spot and discover proof for one of the biggest metal detecting "myths". But first things first... I was actually walking somewhere else and as it often happens, a spot caught my attention. It looked like the structure of a former vegetable garden. A few coil swings revealed that it already was detected (there were also signs in form of old casings on top of the ground). When I found the first item, I thought: "Hmm, maybe it's not the only item that was left". I was right, there was more... The sound of one particular object mimicked a big shell casing. When I dug it out, I couldn't tell what it is at first... until I've spotted a very familiar looking ring on top! A ring that I often mistook for something else... I'm sure, many detectorists had a hart time to identify this find as well. It was part of (what I believe) a (1800's) Victorian umbrella (parasol)! A stunning find in my opinion. Finally I'm able to imagine, how this part looked like. I found an example of a similar looking item on a blog: http://detectingsaxapahaw.blogspot.com/2011/12/meet-me-in-saxapahaw.html It's not the same, but it shows where it was placed inside of an umbrella. I also found a 1700's silver coin and a few other things. I stopped investigating this place at some point and switched to my former plan... A walk into the woods. I thought, I will return to this place at a later point, while the woods should provide a better "adventure" that day. Well, it turned (a little bit) into a frustrating experience. As you saw in the video, I couldn't touch the layer of soil with my "toy" metal detector in most of the places. Sure, if an object is located just below the layer of humus, on top of "real" soil (or 1" deeper), it's possible. But walking over finds with a "helpless" feeling is no fun. Nevertheless it was a great adventure (at least from my perspective). I hope you enjoyed it too, despite my "moaning" :). Thanks for watching!
