For those of you who are new to the channel my name is Fen and I am half British and half Libyan and my lovely fiancé Akasha is American but Czech by blood (hence Culture Clash Reactions) On today's Video, I'm introducing my American Wife to to the legendary Ali G. I myself haven't seen him in action for years and totally forgot how hilarious and outrageous the character truly was.

@renejean25238 months ago For those that didn't know, that "old fella" is Buzz Aldrin. The man who followed Neil Armstrong out of the spacecraft to become the second person to walk on the moon. 39

@matthewwalker54308 months ago It did work in the UK at first. The problem was though that we are a smaller country and he became really popular so people got wise to it more quickly. At first they played along but then people started to feel that even playing along to it was harming their public image and started refusing the interviews. To get around that, Sacha went to America where he was pretty much anonymous and even if a few politicians and scientists began to figure out it was a set up the country is big enough that he could find a new group or area where he was still relatively unknown. You're right too, he started on the 11 o'clock show on Channel 4 in the late 90's and then had his own show for a little while not long after. He then went on hiatus for a short bit once everyone in the UK figured him out before coming back a bit later with Ali G in America. He also did a more recent sketch show in about 2018 roughly on British and American TV (I think it was on Showtime) which was great too. That 2018 show "Who Is America?" was hilarious and I highly recommend checking it out. One of the highlights was him acting like a super-left wing town planner trying to give a presentation to a group of locals from a small town in the Bible Belt about the towns new project to build a super-mosque in the area. ... 41

@JDub7777778 months ago Well to be fair, he started in the UK as a “correspondent” on the 11 o’clock show in the 90’s. So it definitely did work there. Probably a combination of him being too well known there and moving to HBO is why it’s mostly Americans ... 14

@SeeDaRipper...8 months ago He started off in the UK mate (plenty of his stuff on here, classics like bowling, and British etiquette etc) he had to resort to the US after everyone cottoned on...He started life on the 11 o'clock show. (as did Ricky Gervais)
P.S Brits have fallen for this kind of humour for ages Take Jeremy Beadle for instance (game For a Laugh) or the infamous 'Cake' episode which got loads of famous celebrities duped (Brass Eye)

  • @
@aaaa-xf3hx8 months ago The point of Ali g is the character is from Staines, a posh town slightly outside of London but he tries to talk like a kid from the inner city (unsuccessfully) because he wants to sound cool.
Essentially Britains equivalent to a ‘wigger’ it’s mocking the kids pretending to be from rough areas, not the kids from the rough areas themselves

    *Don't think " " are dumb.

@DaChaGee8 months ago He wasn't from a council estate. The joke was that he was from wealthy Staines. Staines council famously renamed it to Staine upon Thames so people don't think it's "ghetto" (oh the irony). 2

@Supkev966 months ago As an American who deals with Americans everyday I can say the reason why Americans have such a hard time picking up on humor is because most Americans are caught up in themselves and can't see the humor in anything. We have some of the funniest comedians but we rather cancel them instead of letting them speak their mind. Everyone is caught up in being woke and progressive and don't realize the damage they're causing for future generations. Society is basically trying to turn us into robots ... 2

@Wang_Monkey4 months ago He did start duping English people but I think as more people became aware of him he needed some fresh victims! By then he'd developed the character more too, probably why you get more vids with Americans ;) 1

@gbphil4 months ago Dennis Pennis pre-dated Ali-G and did much the same. His classic was asking Demi Moore at a red carpet event “How much do you charge to keep your clothes on” at the premiere of Indecent Exposure.

@markedmonds86948 months ago Great guys, he did an interview on Jonathan Ross on you tube about his Ali G character explaining that the idea was to get the person he was interviewing to think he was really daft even before the camera started rolling. Like he said to this US senator when he was in the states "where is we?" the senator goes " The United states" & he went " that's good coz next month I is going to america". ... 3

Sasha Baron Cohen was playing with fire there. Buzz once punched a guy out who keept calling him a liar and that he never went to the moon. The whole thing was caught on camera. ...

@jschap7125 months ago The funny thing is that there are flat-earthers who do believe the moon doesn't exist but is merely a reflection of the sun upon a dome covering the Earth, and that therefore the moon landing never occurred. Sometimes truth is stranger than comedy. ...

@sera27755 months ago This would work anywhere, including the UK, you only need to look at the brilliant dianna morgan character Philomena Cunk. As mentioned in another comment Sasha's characters became so well known in England and later on in the US with the release of his works there it became more difficult for him to get away without being recognised as an actor. Theyre not interviewing a geezer off the street who might spot it straight away, but 'serious' people - academics, politicians, authors - and the interviews are very carefully planned and made to look like it is the real thing and not a comedian. Also, humans tend to try and please and not cause social displeasure, so they don't call out ridiculous statements which are comedic. Lastly, we don't know how many takes there may have been, although granted this is a different situation than a fictional drama show which may have many takes. Also, look at those hidden camera shows, they work in any country. The US as the largest producer of cultural content is the largest target for criticism. ...
